New York Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli is seeking another term in the Nov. 3 general election against Republican challenger Joseph Hernandez.

The state’s amended ballot certification lists DiNapoli on the Democratic and Working Families lines and Hernandez on the Republican and Conservative lines.

Experience

DiNapoli became comptroller on Feb. 7, 2007, according to his official biography. He previously served in the Assembly for 20 years.

His public service began with election to the Mineola school board in 1972. He earned a history degree from Hofstra University in 1976 and a master’s degree from The New School.

The comptroller’s office oversees state finances, conducts audits and administers the state pension fund. DiNapoli’s official biography highlights audits of state and local government, fiscal-stress monitoring and efforts to return unclaimed funds.

Campaign priorities

On his campaign’s policy page, DiNapoli emphasizes financial oversight, accountability for public spending and protecting retirement assets. He presents independent audits as a check on misuse of taxpayer money.

His official biography also describes a goal of moving the state pension portfolio toward net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions by 2040. That is a portfolio goal, rather than a claim that the transition has already been completed.

No submitted Surround Sound Media questionnaire response from DiNapoli was available as of Oct. 14.
