Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Rick Atkinson is scheduled to speak in the Rye area on Monday, Oct. 26, exploring the American Revolution during the nation's 250th anniversary year.
Atkinson's talk shares its name with his latest book, the second volume of his Revolutionary War trilogy. Tickets cost $40 for the talk, which includes a copy of the book, or $75 for a meet-and-greet reception with a signed copy, according to a Patch event listing.
The listing was posted by Bobbi Eggers of Eggers Communication, who serves as director of communications for Christ Church Greenwich in Connecticut. A specific venue and start time were not included in the listing.
Atkinson won the Pulitzer Prize for his World War II book "An Army at Dawn" and has spent a decade chronicling the Revolution. His trilogy's first volume, "The British Are Coming," was a No. 1 New York Times bestseller. His second volume, published earlier this year, covers the war from Fort Ticonderoga to Charleston between 1777 and 1780.
The New York Times called the work "compulsively readable … there is no better writer of narrative history than the Pulitzer Prize-winning Atkinson." NPR Pentagon reporter Tom Bowman included the book on a list of essential reads for understanding America ahead of the anniversary. Bowman wrote that Atkinson makes vivid use of letters and diaries, putting readers in the middle of Revolutionary War battles.
Atkinson was also a featured commentator in Ken Burns' documentary on the American Revolution and has made joint appearances with the filmmaker. He is working on the final volume of his trilogy.
The event falls during a stretch of 250th anniversary programming across the region. Residents looking for more can check these upcoming dates:
