Five days after a powerful July 4 storm ripped through Rye, city crews are still clearing damage from fallen trees, blocked roads, and scattered power issues left behind by winds and heavy rain.
The storm knocked out power to roughly 250 Rye homes and forced several road closures as downed trees and live wires created hazardous conditions across the city. Rye Department of Public Works crews worked overnight July 4 into July 5 to reopen streets and remove debris, according to Rye police.
Several roads remained affected earlier this week, including sections of Manursing Way near the beach clubs, Forest Avenue, and Brevoort Lane. Residents should continue to avoid downed trees and wires, which should be treated as energized.
Con Edison restored power to most affected customers by Tuesday, July 7, though outages continued across the region after the storm left tens of thousands without electricity statewide.
The city opened the Rye Recreation Center as a cooling and charging center during the outage period. Residents experiencing electric or gas service problems should report them directly to Con Edison rather than assume the issue has already been reported.
The storm also forced the cancellation of Playland Park’s annual Fourth of July fireworks show.
More unsettled weather remains possible this week, with the National Weather Service forecasting additional chances for thunderstorms Thursday, July 10, and Friday, July 11.
