Rye voters elected three unopposed candidates and gave State Sen. Shelley Mayer a wide lead on Nov. 3, even though a county-wide ballot scanner failure kept Election Day votes from being counted.
The Westchester County Board of Elections reported no Election Day ballot tallies as of 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, because of a barcode error that disrupted scanners across the county, as MyRye.com reported. Counting could stretch until early Wednesday, Nov. 4, before Election Day ballots are tallied and reported. As we reported Nov. 3, the scanner problems affected polling sites in Rye and Harrison.
But early voting and absentee ballots had already been tallied. With three of four local races uncontested, those numbers were enough to call the outcomes.
Rye City Council, unexpired term
Emily Baldwin, a Democrat, ran unopposed and captured 1,659 votes, or 99.58%. Write-in candidates received seven votes.
Westchester County Legislature, 7th District
Anant Nambiar, a Democrat, also ran unopposed. He collected 4,986 votes, or 99.62%, against 19 write-in votes.
State Assembly, 91st District
Steven Otis, running on the Democratic and Working Families lines, was uncontested. He received 10,162 votes, or 99.64%, with 37 write-in votes.
State Senate, 37th District
The only contested local race was the 37th District State Senate seat. Mayer, running on the Democratic and Working Families lines, held 72.96% with 30,043 votes. Republican Thomas H. Fix Jr. trailed at 27% with 11,118 votes.
Mayer, first elected to the seat in April 2018, chairs the Senate Education and Ethics committees, according to her candidate questionnaire. She represents communities across Westchester County, including the Sound Shore.
All four sets of numbers reflect only early and absentee ballots. Election Day votes were expected to be added to the totals after counting began Wednesday, Nov. 4.
