The Rye Free Reading Room has switched to a new mobile library app, and iPhone and iPad users will need to take a few steps to keep borrowing on their phones.
The Westchester Library System (WLS) replaced its old WLS Mobile app with a new platform built by its vendor, Solus, starting Tuesday, Oct. 20, according to the library's website.
The old app "didn't always work," the library said, citing unexpected logouts, freezes, crashes and other problems.
The transition works differently depending on the device.
Android users receive the new version as an automatic update. If auto-updates are turned on in the Google Play Store, the app installs on its own. Otherwise, users can open the Play Store, search "WLS Mobile" and tap Update.
iPhone and iPad users must download a separate app called Solus Library App from the App Store. After opening it, users type WLSMobile (one word, no spaces) in the Library Code box and tap Continue.
WLS said the split exists because the system is still working to publish its own branded app in Apple's App Store. Rather than ask users to wait with an app that was not working well, WLS is inviting iPhone and iPad users to use the Solus app in the meantime, according to a WLS notice posted by the Irvington Public Library. WLS said it will notify cardholders when a dedicated Apple app is ready.
Logging in on either platform: After the app loads, tap "Login for your local library!" to reach the Rye Free Reading Room. Users can scan the barcode on a physical library card or type in the card number, then enter a PIN.
Library card numbers, linked accounts, holds and checkouts carry over automatically. Lists and reading history are not yet available in the new app but remain accessible through a web browser at opac.westchesterlibraries.org, the WLS notice said.
Cardholders who prefer to skip the app entirely can manage holds, checkouts and account preferences through that same web catalog on any phone browser. Neither the Rye Free Reading Room nor WLS has announced a deadline for when the old app will stop working.
