Rye families looking for Halloween-week outdoor plans have three free nature programs at two local sanctuaries on Friday, Oct. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 31.
Westchester County Parks listed the events in its weekly calendar for the week of Oct. 26 through Nov. 1.
Fishes of Long Island Sound — Friday, Oct. 30, 6:30-7:30 p.m.
The sanctuary curator at Edith G. Read Wildlife Sanctuary will lead an indoor presentation on the fish species that swim in Long Island Sound, including sandbar sharks and Atlantic silverside minnows. The program is free. Call (914) 967-8720 for details.
Fish Seining Net Adventure — Saturday, Oct. 31, 9:30-11 a.m.
A county naturalist will drag a seine net along the Long Island Sound shoreline at Edith G. Read Wildlife Sanctuary so participants can see what lives in the water up close. The county recommends closed-toed water shoes or waterproof boots. Participants should meet at the sanctuary's Visitors Center. Free.
Wild About Halloween — Saturday, Oct. 31, 10-11:30 a.m.
Marshlands Conservancy hosts a Halloween-themed nature walk exploring why pumpkins, bats and spiders are tied to the holiday. After the walk, participants can paint a miniature pumpkin or gourd. The program is free. Call (914) 835-4466 for details.
The county notes that all programs are subject to change without notice. Individual event pages have additional information:
