Rye setter Amelie Modesto surpassed 1,000 career assists Tuesday, Sept. 29, as the Garnets beat Pelham in four sets, 25-16, 20-25, 25-10, 25-16.

Modesto, a senior captain, recorded 34 assists against Pelham along with six aces and seven digs, according to MyRye.com. The milestone caps a steady climb for a player who was sometimes used as a hitter earlier in her career before settling in as one of Section 1's top setters.

The victory was Rye's fifth straight and improved the defending Section 1 Class A champions to 7-2. After opening the season 2-2, the Garnets have dropped just three sets in their last five matches.

The numbers told the story Tuesday. Aside from a second-set loss, Rye won each frame by nine or more points.

Katie Hillis led the attack with 17 kills, four aces and eight digs. Audre Campbell added 12 kills, Giorgia Brizio chipped in six, and Caroline Korian anchored the back row with a team-high 12 digs and four aces.

Head coach Geri Jones, now in her 12th season, spoke about Modesto's value in the Rye Record's Sept. 2 season preview: "She gives everything she has every day, and that's what Amelie brings to this team. She knows her job, and she's going to do it."

Four weeks later, the job description includes a four-digit assist total.

Modesto's game-by-game totals show how she built toward the milestone. She opened the season with 21 assists against Tappan Zee on Sept. 3, posted 36 in a four-set win at Valhalla on Sept. 5, then added 28 in a sweep of Byram Hills on Sept. 25 before the 34-assist performance against Pelham pushed her past the mark.

Rye plays Horace Greeley on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 4:30 p.m., then travels to Eastchester on Saturday, Oct. 3.
