Coveleigh Club Beach in Rye is closed Tuesday, Aug. 4, and Wednesday, Aug. 5, after 1.76 inches of rain fell in 24 hours, the Westchester County Health Department announced on X. The beach is expected to reopen Thursday, Aug. 6, barring additional rainfall.

It is the fifth time this summer that the county has shut down the Stuyvesant Avenue beach. Closures hit June 23–24, July 7–8, July 19–20, July 22 and now Aug. 4–5.

That's nearly one per week.

The shutdowns follow a formula. When rain exceeds half an inch, stormwater washes bacteria-laden road runoff through drainage outfalls near the beach. The county's threshold system triggers a one-day closure for more than half an inch, two days for more than an inch and a case-by-case decision for more than two inches.

This latest closure lands one day after the Mamaroneck Wastewater Treatment Plant discharged roughly 4 million gallons of partially treated sewage into Long Island Sound on Monday, Aug. 3, according to MyRye.com. That plant handles sewage from many Rye homes, and Patch reported that high bacteria levels from the discharge could trigger additional closures along the Sound Shore.

The Aug. 3 spill was the second major release from the Mamaroneck plant in two weeks, following a 536,000-gallon discharge on July 21.

The same Aug. 4–5 rainfall closure also affects beaches in Mamaroneck (Harbor Island Park, Beach Point Club, Orienta Beach Club and Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club) and New Rochelle (Hudson Park Beach, Davenport Beach Club, Greentree Country Club and Surf Club on the Sound).

Residents planning a beach trip Thursday or later should call Coveleigh Club directly before heading out. The county has not announced whether the sewage discharge will extend the closure beyond Aug. 5.

Playland Park's pool and beach remain open through Labor Day on a separate schedule; rides run Wednesday through Sunday this week with fireworks on Friday nights.
