The Harrison school board approved a $22,800 ice hockey agreement with Playland Ice and cleared three student travel trips at its Wednesday, Sept. 9 meeting.
All five board members voted in favor of every item on the agenda. Kelly Mulvoy-Mangan, Kelly Kozak, Samantha Giberga, Benjamin Blaustein and Gabrielle Elfand were present for the 7:15 p.m. session.
Debate team heads out of state
The board approved back-to-back out-of-state trips for the Harrison High School debate team. Students will travel to the Greenhill Fall Classic in Addison, Texas, departing Friday, Sept. 18 and returning Monday, Sept. 21.
The following week, the team travels to West Des Moines Valley High School in West Des Moines, Iowa, departing Sept. 25 and returning Sept. 28.
Board member Samantha Giberga made the motion for both trips. Board member Benjamin Blaustein seconded.
Baseball spring training in Florida
The boys varsity baseball team received approval for a spring training trip to Fort Pierce, Florida. Players depart March 19, 2027, and return March 25, 2027. Giberga also made that motion, with Blaustein seconding.
Board approves Playland Ice hockey agreement
The board approved an ice hockey agreement with Playland Ice in Rye for the Rye Town Titans-Harrison High School 2026-27 season at a cost of approximately $22,800. Board member Kelly Mulvoy-Mangan made the motion, and board member Gabrielle Elfand seconded it. The minutes did not specify whether the amount covers Harrison's share or the full cost for the merged program.
The agreement follows the board's May 6 approval of a four-school ice hockey merger joining Blind Brook, Rye Neck, Port Chester and Harrison for the 2026-27 season. Harrison was designated the host school. The merged districts will each pay a per-pupil fee once final costs are set.
The Rye Town Harrison Titans went 20-2-1 in the 2023-24 season, winning the League C title and reaching the Section 1 Division 1 semifinal.
New Newspaper Club at Klein Middle School
Louis M. Klein Middle School will get a new extracurricular club: a student newspaper. No details on an adviser or start date were included in the meeting record.
The board also accepted a $2,300 donation from the Samuel J. Preston PTA 5th Grade Committee for the elementary school's use.
The next Harrison school board meeting is Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. at Klein Middle School.
