French-inspired bakery chain Maman served more than 400 customers when it opened its first Westchester location at 64 Purchase Street on July 23.
The 2,000-square-foot café replaced The Snackery, which closed at the end of 2025. It took about six months to convert the space into Maman's 63rd location, according to the Rye Record.
Chocolate chip cookies and iced lattes were the top sellers on opening day, when free samples and gifts drew the crowd.
Marketing director Andrea Szot said the chain tracked customer feedback showing many Manhattan regulars had moved to Rye over the past dozen years, particularly during the pandemic.
"We've had Rye on our radar for a while now," Szot told the Rye Record.
Szot was Maman's first marketing hire 10 years ago, when the company had just two Manhattan locations. She said the former Snackery space appealed immediately: "We were really thankful for that kind of space, which had really good bones to work with."
She said the Rye Chamber of Commerce helped spread the word during the hiring process, and the chain plans to form alliances with local schools and community groups this fall.
Co-founder Elisa Marshall and founding partner Benjamin Sormonte named the brand after the French word for "mother."
The concept draws on memories of their mothers' kitchens in Canada and France. The Rye location features décor inspired by the south of France, mismatched blue and white floral plates, a large floral installation and a custom postcard by Westchester artist Meredith Wing with the handwritten message "Bonjour, Rye."
Szot said her team views the café market in downtown Rye as competitive. Reunion Coffee is expected to open two blocks away at 36 Purchase Street, in the former TD Bank space, by summer's end.
The new arrivals continue a wave of openings along Purchase Street, where boutiques including Baxter, The Stand, Sartina and Village Mercantile have filled storefronts over the past 18 months, the Rye Record reported, even as national retailers closed more than 7,300 locations in 2024.
Maman is open daily. The chain said it will announce specific community partnership details as the school year begins.
