Rye Brook residents can start raking leaves to the curb when the village's annual curbside collection begins Tuesday, Oct. 13. The 12- to 13-week season runs through the third week of December.

Crews of three to four Highway Department workers will cover the village in thirds, divided by major roadways to balance leaf volume across neighborhoods, according to an announcement from the village. The village aims to hit each street no more than three weeks apart during peak periods, though weather can push that timeline.

Trucks will not be rerouted for any reason, Superintendent of Public Works Michal J. Nowak said in the announcement.

Where and how to pile leaves

Leaves must sit in a tight row, no wider than 4 feet, along the center of the curb line. Rows cannot extend more than 2 feet into the roadway. Contractors and homeowners should create long windrows rather than mounds, and no pile should cover a storm drain.

Leaves in plastic bags will not be picked up.

What to keep out of the pile

Branches, sticks, stones, used planting pots, toys, broken lawn furniture and fence posts must stay out of leaf rows. The village warned that those materials can be drawn into collection equipment, risking serious injury to workers and costly repairs. Piles with significant contamination will be skipped until the debris is removed.

Enforcement

Placing leaf piles in the street is prohibited. The village said violations and summonses will be issued. Leaves in the roadway are unsafe for motorists and slow collection for the entire neighborhood, according to the announcement.

Tracking pickup progress

The village posts street-by-street collection progress on its leaf collection page and updates it routinely. Residents can check the site once the season begins to see when crews last passed their street. Collection dates are approximate and subject to change.
