Contractors, homeowners, and business owners in Rye Brook no longer need to visit Village Hall to file building permit applications. The village launched a fully online permitting system on Monday, July 20, accessible here.
The platform, built by New York City-based startup GovWell, lets users apply for building permits, upload plans, schedule inspections, and check application status from a single dashboard. The Village of Rye Brook said in its official announcement that the system is part of a broader push to make municipal services faster and more transparent for residents and contractors.
What changes
The practical shift for anyone doing construction or commercial work in the village: permit applicants can now submit materials online, track where their application stands in the review process, and access all building-permit-related information in one place. No more trips to the Building Department at 938 King Street, Rye Brook, just to check on a filing's status.
The village said it expects the system to reduce delays and help applicants understand next steps more clearly. Village staff and GovWell are available to help users navigate the new portal, and frequently asked questions are posted at GovWell's Help Center.
What stays the same
The village's building codes, review standards, and service expectations are unchanged. Village staff will still review every submission. The Building Department remains open at 938 King Street for anyone who prefers in-person assistance.

GovWell, founded in 2023, says it serves more than 130 municipalities and counties across 34 states. The company raised $25 million in Series A funding in May 2026 led by Insight Partners. Co-founder and CEO Troy LeCaire, who previously worked in the U.S. Senate, said in a May 14 press release announcing that funding round: "Government should work better in the age of AI. The company has not released Rye Brook-specific performance data, and the village has not announced a formal date to evaluate the system.
