Rye police and firefighters responded to an electrical fire at the intersection of 2nd Street and Purdy Avenue on Tuesday, Aug. 4, then turned around to host the city's National Night Out celebration that same evening.

The Rye Police Department posted a photo on social media Tuesday afternoon showing first responders working at the scene of the blaze, according to the Rye Record.

The department asked residents to avoid the area around the intersection. No information on injuries, structural damage or the fire's cause has been released.

Hours later, the same departments welcomed residents to Rye Recreation at 281 Midland Ave. for National Night Out, a free community event running from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The annual campaign, held on the first Tuesday of August in communities nationwide, promotes partnerships between police and the neighborhoods they serve.

Rye PD said the event offered a chance for residents to meet officers and spend time with neighbors. The evening featured music, games, prizes, a water balloon fight and a dunk tank. Complimentary Longford's Ice Cream was available courtesy of the police department, with other food for purchase.

Harrison Police hosted their own National Night Out at Library Park the same evening. Several other Westchester communities also held events.
