Rye will honor 16 residents lost to the Sept. 11 attacks and their aftermath at a ceremony Friday, Sept. 11, at the Rye Firehouse, 15 Locust Ave.
The commemoration runs from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and marks 25 years since the 2001 attacks. The full program, posted by MyRye.com, includes a blessing by Rev. Andrea Raynor, the fire department chaplain, followed by opening remarks from Mayor Josh Nathan.
Five elected officials have been invited to speak: Congressman George Latimer, State Sen. Shelley Mayer, State Assemblyman Steven Otis, County Executive Kenneth Jenkins and County Legislator Anant Nambiar.
After a moment of silence, Rye firefighter Danny Archino will read the names of the 16 residents on the memorial program.
The program marks 15 of the names without further notation. The sixteenth, Kevin Nolan, is noted as having died from 9/11-related health impacts.
The full list: Thomas Crotty, Benjamin Fisher, Yugi Goya, W. Ward Haynes, Takashi Kinoshita, Gary E. Koecheler, Teddy Maloney, Francis N. McGuinn, Robert McLaughlin Jr., Christopher D. Mello, George W. Morell, Kevin Nolan, Sean Gordon O'Neill, Thomas A. Palazzo, Michael J. Simon and Allen V. Upton.
Robin Latimer, a Rye resident and wife of Congressman Latimer, will close the ceremony with a performance of "God Bless America."
She has sung the song at the annual commemoration for years.
The ceremony comes days after retired United Airlines flight attendant Paul "Paulie" Veneto pushed his airline beverage cart through Rye on Monday, Sept. 7, reaching the 1,000th mile of his multi-year "Paulie's Push" memorial walk.
Veneto said more children come out for him in Rye than anywhere else on his route.
"And the fact that I crossed my 1,000th mile here, what a perfect place to celebrate it," he told MyRye.com on Sept. 7.
Veneto planned to arrive at Ground Zero in Manhattan by Friday for the national 25th anniversary commemoration.
The ceremony is open to the public.
