The fire that broke out on Rye Playland's Dragon Coaster on Saturday, Sept. 19, was likely electrical and accidental, Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said.
No one was injured. Rye firefighters brought the blaze under control within about 15 minutes of arriving at 8:43 p.m., according to MyRye.com.
The fire started in a section of the wooden coaster 30 feet off the ground.
"Rest assured: this Dragon will rise again for Playland's 99th season," Jenkins said in a statement on Sept. 20.
Jenkins said the damage can be repaired by Playland's maintenance team and that work is expected during the fall. The park's summer season ended Sept. 13, so the coaster was not in operation when the fire broke out.
The Westchester County Cause and Origin Team responded alongside Westchester County Police to investigate. The Rye Fire Department said the cause remains under investigation but is suspected to be accidental. The exact source of ignition has not been determined.
Mutual-aid companies from Larchmont and Harrison helped Rye firefighters extinguish remaining hot spots. Port Chester's ladder truck and a Rye Brook engine covered the City of Rye while local units stayed at Playland. The last Rye Fire Department unit cleared the scene at about 11:14 p.m.
The fire came just months after the 97-year-old coaster reopened. The Dragon Coaster was closed for all of 2025 and underwent significant renovations, including an entirely new dragon tunnel, before returning in May, the Rye Record reported.
It ran all summer through the Sept. 13 closing day.
Rye FD Captain Clyde Pitts told MyRye.com the night of the fire that crews achieved a quick knockdown and the damage appeared fixable.
U.S. Rep. George Latimer, a former Westchester county executive, was at the scene Saturday night with his wife.
He told lohud.com the fire posed no threat to the ride overall and was contained quickly.
Playland's historic carousel suffered a separate fire in 2017. That repair took four years, with the ride reopening in 2021. Jenkins' pledge to have the Dragon Coaster ready for the 99th season points to a faster turnaround, though no specific opening date has been announced.
