Scared by the Sound, the haunted attraction at Playland Park in Rye, opens its 25th season on Friday, Oct. 9.
The event spans more than 12,000 square feet inside the amusement park, according to Westchester County Parks. It will run Fridays through Sundays throughout October, with a final three-night stretch from Thursday, Oct. 29, through Saturday, Oct. 31.
"Twenty-five years later, we're still finding new ways to scare our guests, and this year will be no exception," creator Pat Costello said in a Westchester County Parks press release dated Sept. 24.
Tickets range from $29 to $40 per person. Parking costs $10 per car. All access and drop-off is through the Fountain Plaza entrance at 1 Playland Parkway. Tickets are on sale online through the event's website.
The attraction is not recommended for children under 12, though younger visitors may enter with an adult.
Kid-friendly matinees
Families with younger children have a daytime option. Scared by the Sound will offer matinees on Saturday, Oct. 24, and Sunday, Oct. 25, from noon to 4 p.m. The matinees replace the full scares with lighter Halloween activities, including kid-friendly vendors and goody bags. Matinee tickets are sold by time slot and are also available online.
A 25-year tradition
Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said the event has given generations of families and thrill-seekers a reason to come together each Halloween season. Acting Parks Commissioner William Bland said events like Scared by the Sound let visitors experience Playland beyond its regular amusement-park attractions.
Costello's operation fills the park after its traditional ride season ends, turning the Fountain Plaza area into a walkthrough haunted experience each October.
