Harrison High School will host two Section 1 championship tennis tournaments this October, drawing the top high school players from across Westchester and Rockland counties for nearly two weeks of postseason competition.

What's on the schedule.

The girls tennis individual tournament runs Oct. 10-14, followed by the team tournament Oct. 17-23 — both hosted at Harrison High School as part of a three-year site plan the Section 1 executive committee approved in 2025. Fall sports practices begin Aug. 24, with the first matches of the regular season starting Aug. 31; the players who advance through the season will make their way to Harrison for the sectional finals.

Other Section 1 fall championships are scattered across the region: girls soccer at Arlington High School, boys soccer at Mahopac, field hockey at Nyack, girls volleyball at the Westchester County Center, and football at North Rockland's recently renovated complex — football's new home after moving from Mahopac for the 2026 season.

Also this week: a swim with a much bigger purpose.

Nearly 1,000 swimmers and hundreds of volunteers are expected in Larchmont Saturday for the 34th annual Swim Across America – Long Island Sound, a point-to-point open water swim starting at Larchmont Yacht Club and finishing at Larchmont Shore Club. Swimmers can take on 2K, 5K or 10K distances — the 10K starts all the way across the Sound in Glen Cove, Long Island — plus a half-mile pool swim option at Larchmont Shore Club. The day kicks off early: 10K swimmers depart by boat at 5:30 a.m., with the 5K starting at 7:30 and the 2K at 8.

Event director Jean Fufidio said "every stroke and every dollar helps support the doctors, researchers and caregivers who are making breakthroughs in cancer care." Since 1992, the swim has raised more than $32 million for cancer research and patient support, with this year's goal set at $2.5 million benefiting Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Columbia University Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medicine, and Cancer Support Team.
