Pink burlap ribbons will appear across Rye Brook, Harrison and six other communities in October as Soul Ryeders launches its 13th annual Tie the Town Pink campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Village of Rye Brook announced the campaign on Monday, Sept. 14. More than 100 volunteers plan to tie roughly 2,000 ribbons on trees, mailboxes, benches and front doors across participating neighborhoods in early October, according to the Soul Ryeders campaign page.

Ribbons cost $30 each. Residents can purchase one to display at a home, business or public space, and volunteers handle the tying. The ribbons are made from natural burlap, which the organization describes as environmentally friendly.

Participating communities span Rye, Rye Neck, Rye Brook, Port Chester, Harrison, West Harrison, Mamaroneck and Larchmont. The campaign's reach has grown steadily since its founding more than a decade ago.

Soul Ryeders is a Tri-State area nonprofit that provides resources, programs and support to people affected by any type of cancer. All services are offered at no cost to clients and their caregivers, according to the organization's website. Proceeds from ribbon purchases and donations go directly toward funding those programs.

Residents outside the volunteer delivery area can pick up ribbons or have them mailed for a small fee. Questions can be directed to [email protected].

Lisa Dominici Faries, who was co-chair of the campaign in 2016, told the Daily Voice that October that the idea "originally came from a friend and it is based on tying a yellow ribbon around a tree when soldiers return from war."

Exact dates for the early-October ribbon installations have not yet been posted. Soul Ryeders asks interested residents to check the campaign page for scheduling updates.
