Three boaters were pulled from Long Island Sound on Sunday, Aug. 23, after their vessel sank off Manursing Island in Rye, the second major marine rescue in the area in six days.
The Rye Police Department Marine Unit responded after receiving reports of people shouting for help in the water, according to Patch. Rye Police boat PB1 and the Westchester County Police Marine Unit located the three boaters in the water approximately 45 minutes after their vessel had gone under.
All three were safely pulled from the Sound and transported by the Westchester County Police Marine Unit to Playland in Rye. None were injured. All declined medical attention, according to the Rye Police Department.
Sea Tow responded to assist with recovery of the sunken vessel.
The department did not release the identities of the boaters or details about the vessel.
The rescue came six days after the Rye Police Marine Unit rescued eight passengers from a boat that ran aground on rocks off Sands Point in North Hempstead on Aug. 17. In that incident, one passenger sustained a back injury, and multiple agencies assisted, including crews from New Rochelle, Mamaroneck, North Hempstead, Nassau County, the U.S. Coast Guard and FDNY.
After the Aug. 17 rescue, Rye Police said in a Facebook post that emergencies on the water can develop quickly and that coordinated responses ensure personnel and resources are available when needed most.
The Rye Police Department said the Aug. 23 rescue underscored the partnership between its marine unit and the Westchester County Police Department Marine Unit in keeping local waterways safe.
Boaters in distress on Long Island Sound can reach the U.S. Coast Guard on VHF Channel 16 or by calling 911.
