Two Richmond Hill, Queens, residents were struck and killed by a tractor-trailer on Interstate 95 southbound in Port Chester on Sunday, Aug. 2, after stepping out of their vehicle following a minor collision.

New York State Police identified the victims as Kamla K. Singh, 72, and Andrew Sookdeo, 40. Both died at the scene near mile marker 14.2, a stretch of the New England Thruway heavily used by Rye, Harrison and Rye Brook commuters.

State police in New Rochelle responded at approximately 8:30 p.m., according to an NYSP press release. A preliminary investigation determined that Singh and Sookdeo had exited their vehicle after a prior fender-bender and were standing in the right travel lane when the tractor-trailer struck them.

The tractor-trailer driver remained on scene and is cooperating with investigators. No charges are anticipated, state police said.

NYSP Troop K is handling the ongoing investigation.

Mile marker 14.2 sits in the Village of Port Chester, just south of the Rye city line. The crash underscores the danger of exiting a vehicle on an active highway after a minor collision. Drivers involved in fender-benders on I-95 should pull fully onto the shoulder or, when possible, exit the highway before stopping.
