Rye Playland will open a 42-passenger pirate ship ride called Scorpios on Thursday, Aug. 13, giving families a new reason to visit after the park permanently removed two rides this summer.

The pendulum-style swing ride, built by German manufacturer Metallbau Emmeln, will sit next to the Double Shot ride near the music stage, according to MyRye.com. A grand opening ceremony is set for noon.

Scorpios is the first new ride added to Playland's lineup this season. County officials had hinted at new attractions earlier in the year but kept details quiet until this week.

"The opening of Scorpios is another exciting step in Playland Park's continued comeback," County Executive Ken Jenkins said. He added that the county is proud to bring a new ride to one of Westchester's most beloved destinations and invited residents to come try it.

Acting Parks Commissioner William Bland called the ride "a wonderful addition" and said the county is continuing to invest in the park's historic legacy.

The addition follows the county's early-August confirmation that it permanently removed the Himalaya ride in Kiddyland and the Sky Flyer adult ride, shrinking the park's active inventory to 38.

As we reported July 30, Playland had hit its best operating mark of the summer with 34 of 40 rides running before those removals became official.

Scorpios features a Mediterranean-inspired ship design with a back-and-forth swinging motion. The county says its AC-powered drive system delivers smooth acceleration. Riders must be at least 50 inches tall to ride alone; children between 43 and 49 inches need a supervising companion who is at least 14 years old.

The county did not disclose the ride's cost.

Playland's Big Park Ride Band costs $27 for Westchester residents and $32 for non-residents. Kiddyland bands are $20 and $25, respectively. Parking is $15 per car.

Coming up at Playland: Fireworks continue every Friday through Sept. 4. The park's season runs through Labor Day, Sept. 7.
